At Averroes it is our goal to provide our students with a holistic approach to their education.  As part of the Averroes’ tradition, each grade participates in culminating travel to provide the experiential knowledge of the subject matter covered in the classroom.  Travel is a core component of our curriculum and is required for all of our students.

9th and 10th Grade

Our 9th and 10th grade students embark on two trips on alternate years: to the Navajo Nation in Arizona, and to the South to learn about the Civil Rights movement.

Estimated Time of Travel: Spring (March/April)

Navajo Nation: This trip aligns with the World Cultures and Geography course as it has an emphasis on Native American Studies as well as U.S History.  This trip provides context to what they have been learning throughout the year and insha’Allah further invigorates their interest in the content.  Students leave feeling appreciation for the freedoms and comforts of their world and feel a sense of responsibility towards the natives and the earth they lived on before the colonization. The main purpose of the trip is service learning and cultural exchange with the Navajo people.  Students will share meals, repair sites and learn from each other. Other activities include hiking and museum visits.

Southern Civil Rights Movement: Students experience a Historical and Educational Tour in a bus throughout the south. Tours are about 5 days long and focus on historical sites of the Civil Rights Movement.  The tours of the south are both enlightening and empowering for all students, as they will learn people from all races died and suffered for the freedoms we enjoy today.

11th Grade

Estimated Time of Travel: Spring (April/May)

In the 11 grade, students travel to the nation’s capitol, Washington D.C.  This trip aligns with the U.S Government and Civics course that is taken over the course of the year, as well as the Policy and Advocacy seminar they take part in.  This trip provides context to what they have been learning throughout the year and insha’Allah further invigorate their interest in the content.

12th Grade

Estimated Time of Travel: Spring (March/April)

In the 12th grade, our students take part in the culminating trip to Spain – the inspiration for our namesake, Averroes.  In Spain, students explore various cities from Madrid to Granada and find the numerous contributions of Muslims of the past and today.

This trip is meant to bring life to the real contributions of Muslims in the West and inspire our students to be that same change in our society today.
